Use Target Selection correctly

#TargetSelection #cube view #Basics

💡 Compare plan and actual data flexibly

Use Target Selection to display different time periods for each version in a cube view.

🎯 What you will learn in this short

In this video, I show you how to use Target Selection to display different periods for plan and actual data. You will see the limitation of a standard selection.
You will also learn how to keep different quarters for each version.

Limitations of standard selection

You understand why a standard quarter selection affects both plan and actuals.

Use Target selection

You learn how to activate the target area and select it specifically.

Represent different periods

You see how plan and actuals are displayed simultaneously with different quarters.

✍️ Practical example

Scenario:

Periods cannot be displayed specifically

Plan should show all four quarters, but actuals should show only the fourth quarter.

Result:

Only required quarters are displayed

Plan and actual are displayed correctly with different viewing periods.

What was covered: Enabled Target Selection + selected quarters by version + kept the selection

Die anderen drei Quartale gehen also verloren.

Dann schau dir gerne mein anderes Video dazu an.

Do you use Target Selection in Planning Analytics? Consider a classic example: you have actual and plan data for all four quarters of the current year. You want to display only the fourth quarter for actual data but all four quarters for the plan. With a standard selection, choosing the fourth quarter also limits the plan to that quarter, so the other three quarters disappear.

Target Selection solves this problem. Click the relevant button and the data area in the cube view turns light grey. You can now define exactly which quarters to display for plan and actual data. I hold Ctrl and select quarters one to four for the plan version and only quarter four for the actual version. I then right-click and select Keep.

The view now shows different periods depending on the version, resolving the original problem. Let me know in the comments how you use this feature. To learn more about symmetric and asymmetric views, watch my other video on that topic.
