Create the alias attribute
Open the dimension in the Modeling Workbench. Go to Attributes and click Add attribute. Enter a suitable name, such as MonthName, and choose the Alias type.

Meaningful names for your members.
Technical member names are not always easy to read. An alias adds a meaningful label, such as a full month name. In Planning Analytics Workspace, you create the alias attribute directly in the dimension and then select it in the set editor.
The short answer
Open the dimension and go to Attributes. Click Add attribute, enter a name and choose the Alias type. Fill in the labels you want to use, then select the alias attribute in the set editor.

Enter the alias values
Fill in the new attribute column with the labels you want for each member. For a month dimension, these could be January, February and March.
Select the alias in the set editor
Open the set editor for the dimension and select the new alias attribute for display. Check that the members appear with the labels you entered.
A MONTH EXAMPLE
From “01” to “January”.
In this simplified example, the members are named 01, 02 and 03. An alias attribute adds the full month names. The underlying member names remain unchanged.

Any questions?
Does an alias replace the original member name?
No. An alias is an additional name for the same member. It does not create a new member or change the underlying member name.
Why choose the Alias type?
The Alias type lets Planning Analytics use the attribute values as alternative member names. An ordinary string attribute provides additional information but is not an alias.
Can I also use an alias as a tooltip?
Yes. Supported PAW versions let you choose an alias attribute as the tooltip in a cube view. Learn how to configure your tooltips.
