Book themes in PAW: apply a design to your books

This video shows how to create and apply design themes for books in Planning Analytics Workspace. It covers central administration and selecting a theme in edit mode.

The short answer

Book themes give books and their widgets a consistent appearance. Administrators manage themes centrally, while authors select a theme for each book.

English transcript

In IBM Planning Analytics Workspace, you can create custom design themes for your books. This feature is available from version 2.1.23 or 3.1.10, introduced in July 2026. I go to the reports and open a simple example. In edit mode, I can see a new paintbrush icon in the top-right corner. Under Theme, there is a drop-down list. The built-in theme is currently selected, which is the IBM default.

To add a new theme, I go to Administration, then Customizations, and open the new Book themes tab. Here I can see the default theme we have already used and three IBM examples. I can download and customise these examples. The downloaded file lets me specify my own colour codes.

This allows me to create custom design themes or adapt the appearance to my company’s corporate identity and upload it again. In this example, I want to use IBM’s Enterprise Dark theme. I create a copy, name it Dark and save it. When I reopen my book in edit mode, the new Dark theme appears in the drop-down list.

I select it, see a preview and click Apply theme. The new design theme and colour codes are now applied to the book.

Step by step

01

Open the book in edit mode

Open your book and enter edit mode. Use the paintbrush icon to access the theme selector.

02

Manage book themes centrally

In Administration, open Customizations and the Book themes area. Use an existing theme or download an example to edit.

03

Select and apply the theme

Create a copy of Enterprise Dark, for example. Select it in the book, check the preview and apply the theme.

Version availability

The feature was introduced in July 2026 with PAW 2.1.23 and 3.1.10. Administration labels differ between cloud and local deployments. Book themes are separate from Workspace themes for the application interface.

Practical example

Scenario

The book uses the built-in default appearance. The example requires a dark IBM theme.

Result

A copy of Enterprise Dark is available as a custom theme and has been applied to the book.

Frequently asked questions

Does this also change the PAW interface?

No. Book themes apply to books and their widgets. Workspace themes control the interface outside books. Customise the PAW interface theme.

Who manages the themes?

Administrators manage book themes centrally. Book authors apply available themes in edit mode.
