IBM PLANNING ANALYTICS · MODELLING · DIMENSIONS

Delete members in IBM Planning Analytics.
Choose the right deletion option.

Was a member created by mistake, or does it no longer belong under a parent? In the dimension editor, you can remove it from a parent, a hierarchy or the dimension. Choose the scope that matches your intended change.

The short answer

Open the dimension, select the member and open the Delete menu. Choose the appropriate option. Deleting from the dimension can delete associated stored cube data. Check all affected cubes and back up any data you need first.

Read the video summary

Open the dimension in the Modeling Workbench and select the member. Before deleting it, check where it is used and whether affected cubes contain data you still need. Open the Delete drop-down menu. Choose From parent, From hierarchy or From dimension according to the required scope. The video removes an incorrectly created member from a version dimension. Read the confirmation and proceed only when its scope matches your intention. Then check the affected structure and views. Recreating a member with the same name does not restore deleted data.

IN PLANNING ANALYTICS WORKSPACE

Step by step.

01

Check the member and its impact

Open the dimension in the Modeling Workbench and select the member. Before deleting it, check where it is used and whether affected cubes contain data you still need.

02

Choose the deletion option

Open the Delete drop-down menu. Choose From parent, From hierarchy or From dimension according to the required scope. The video removes an incorrectly created member from a version dimension.

03

Confirm deletion and check the result

Read the confirmation and proceed only when its scope matches your intention. Then check the affected structure and views. Recreating a member with the same name does not restore deleted data.

IN PRACTICE

Three options with different scopes.

First decide whether you want to change a relationship or remove the member entirely.

FROM PARENT

Remove the relationship.

Removes the relationship to the selected parent. This does not delete the member from the entire dimension.

FROM HIERARCHY

Change the hierarchy.

Removes the member from the selected hierarchy. Check the affected hierarchy and the confirmation carefully.

FROM DIMENSION

Delete the member entirely.

Removes the member across the dimension. For leaf members, associated stored data in affected cubes is lost.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Any questions?

Does From parent delete the member entirely?

No. This option removes the selected parent-child relationship. It is different from deleting the member from the entire dimension.

Are all cubes affected?

When deleting from the dimension, consider every cube using that dimension. The change is not limited to the currently open view.

Can recreating the member restore deleted data?

No. Reusing the same member name does not restore deleted values. You need a suitable backup or an available source from which to reload them.
